Case studies

A strained hamstring, an inflamed shoulder, a pinched nerve - these sorts of conditions affect almost all of us at some stage and even more so as a result of playing sport or exercising. Traditionally not well treated by GPs, people are increasingly looking to Osteopaths, Physiotherapists and Chiropractors for a more hands-on approach to treating these - and many other - conditions with impressive results.

Sports Injury Appointment Line has pulled together a selection of real-life stories showing the impact and effectiveness of osteopathy, physiotherapy and chiropractic in treating both acute and chronic musculo-skeletal conditions suffered as a result of a sporting injury.

Patient Name:

Chris, Victoria Dock, London

Symptoms:

As a result of a scrum collapse many years ago about I damaged some of the ligaments in my lower back, an injury that has since required periods of treatment. Having taken-up rowing the problem reoccurred following an on-water incident that caused the boat to lurch violently mid-stroke. My lower back was in acute spasm, and it was impossible to do almost anything, let alone continue training.

Treatment:

Having always used Physiotherapists in the past I was going to go down that path again, but a member of my club recommended a Chiropractor who did a lot of work with other rowers. His treatment had an almost instantaneous effect - the muscle spasms in my lower back virtually ceased and despite some lingering soreness for a few days he was able to focus his treatment on addressing the underlying misalignment of my pelvis and lower group of vertebrae. Lots of manipulation and deep tissue massage… a bit uncomfortable at times but very effective.

Feedback:

Had about ten sessions with the Chiropractor in all, initially two a week and then stretching out to monthly for the last couple. As well as the spasms having been resolved the effect of the manipulation has been to make me feel a lot more comfortable in the boat and in the weights room when putting myself into positions where I'm fully extended - such as at the start of the stroke. Really impressed at the thoroughness of the treatment and the degree to which my Chiropractor understood the mechanics of my sport and could see how my situation was affecting my performance.

Patient Name:

Nat, Bromley

Symptoms:

I usually run 3 times a week and for at least 5 miles, sometimes even 10. After a two week holiday when I did not train I tried a long run and after 2 miles I pulled my hamstring muscle. It was incredibly sore - I limped home - and was worse the next day.

Treatment:

My physio did heaps of ultrasound, massage and stretching on my hamstring. I also had stretching to do at home.

Feedback:

I know I would eventually have gotten better by resting but I was worried about whether I would fully recover - and I wanted to get back into running faster. I was back at it again after 4 weeks and I am sure it would have taken longer otherwise. I also got a lot of advice about how to avoid future injury by better stretching and also some different trainers.

Patient Name:

Warwick, London

Symptoms:

Painful shoulder soreness restricting ability to do my favourite sport which is rock climbing.

Treatment:

Saw the Osteopath you suggested and got some deep massage treatment as well as some stretching of the ligament. He also manipulated my back but very gently.

Feedback:

I felt immediate improvement after the first session. He gave me some stretching exercises to do everyday as well as some shoulder exercises for when I am at my desk. I did two further sessions and am now back at the climbing wall twice a week.
